Time to taper . . .

07-23-13
Tue-AM: 5 mi (:46) // Greenway
Bridge Which Must Not Be Named (2x)
Just some easy miles along the Greenway. Didn't feel too great, but so it goes sometimes.

Tapering's gotta include breakfast! An Ashley special.

Wed-AM: 6 mi (:52) // Greenway
Bridge Which Must Not Be Named (2x), Sabo (2x)
Took it easy. Nice running weather, even a slight summer chill in the air, with temps in the low +60Fs. Light sprinkles on the way back brought out that pungent smell of freshly damp asphalt. Gotta love it.

Rest, drove up to Carlton.

Flannel and toboggans in late July. Life is good. Loving the small-town feel of Carlton.
The Voyageur race is on the same weekend as the "Carlton Daze Festival" so there was actually a 5k Friday night.
Who knew? It was fun spectating. Ashley said if we come back next year she could do that 5k!
And like you do at all good festivals, we found some fried rice.

07-27-13
Sat: 50 mi (8:50) // Voyageur Trail 50 Mile
Voyageur bridges (6x), St. Louis River bridge (2x)
Finished in 8:50.04, not sure what place (~20th?). Really fun out-and-back course, mostly over rolling ski trails and singletrack (4452' gain, equal loss). The Powerlines and Jarrow's Beach more than lived up to their pre-race hype -- made all the more memorable by some afternoon rains. Favorite section was probably the pine tree forest (~mile 13/37) - only trees in sight as far as the eyes could see were big pines. Reminded me of home! Lasted less than a mile, but loved the pine smell in the air and the soft trail underneath. The temperature was perfect for racing (+46F at the start, +50Fs during the day), but kept the effort conservative throughout. Hit 4:02 at halfway, 4:48 on the way back. All in all: a well-organized race and a well-marked course with great volunteers! (race report to follow)
